Longing for Peace and Quiet?
Pray this with me: Lord, quiet me with Your love
“He will quiet you by His love;
He will exult over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
I brought my hands to my face in frustration as my dog belted out eardrum shattering howls and barking to match the opera song coming from our television. Between the dog’s “singing,” one kid trying to talk to me about a struggle at school, and the other one needing immediate help with homework, my brain was overwhelmed by the amount of noise in my home at that moment. Not to mention dings from my phone, work projects needing attention, and trying to figure out what’s for dinner (who else hates this question?) overwhelming burdens and distractions, making it hard to focus.
Do you have “noise" similar to my dog’s bark that makes it hard to be present, focused, and available to the life before you? The world we live in can be deafening. It’s loud with hate, comparison, division, fears, pressure, health woes, and constant striving. The battle for peace and quiet within our hearts can feel impossible when life’s endless demands, emotional weight, and constant distractions pull us in every direction, leaving little room to breathe or focus on God. The enemy is well aware of this because he knows if we are busy, upset, and distracted, we are not purposeful with our time, relationships, and with God. We are more easily influenced to turn to comforts from the world and more bent towards sin.
Zephaniah 3:17 is a welcoming invitation for those of us who are desperate for quiet against the daily strife, stressors, and battles. Although Prophet Zephaniah delivered a message of judgement to God’s people during the reign of King Josiah (likely in the early part of his reign, between 635 and 625 BC), he also brought good news of safety and blessings. He reminded the people of Judah—and all believers, including us today—of God’s relentless love.
The Hebrew word for love in this verse, ahabah, is used to describe the deep, covenantal love that God has for His people, as well as the love that individuals are called to have for God and one another. This term encompasses both emotional affection and a commitment to act in the best interest of the other. He loves us deeply and is committed to act in our best interest. Doesn’t that just bring a great peace over your heart? Praying this truth helps you to trust Him all the more, springing forth peace in your life.
His love can settle the noise and the war raging within us. Like a loving mom with her crying baby, He draws us close to Him, comforting us with His caring embrace, and hushing the noise with His beautiful promises. We dwell in His holy arms, resting in the knowledge that…
He is love. (1 John 4:8)
His love for us is steadfast. (Isaiah 54:10)
His love for us is unconditional. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
His love for us is everlasting. (Jeremiah 31:2-3)
(We will study each of these in our February study, join us!)
A heart full of love rests (MacLaren’s Expositions). This quote is full of truth: the power of knowing His love for us creates a quiet heart—content, relaxed, and unwavering against the noise of this world. His love beckons us beside still waters (Psalm 23:2) and gives us rest (Matthew 11:28-30). He tenderly soothes our sorrows and pours into our weaknesses because He cares. We are loved and held in our mess and brokenness. He sings a song of great love over us, abounding in pure heavenly joy to be with us forevermore. He continually pursues us with His love, and I am so glad He never stops!
You’re so loved my friends! Now, go rest!
