“You are my hiding place and my shield.” Psalm 119:114
Have you ever watched the miraculous birth of an elephant? Not only is the birth amazing to witness but the natural response from the other sister elephants is what takes my breath away. Surrounding the vulnerable birthing mother who is unable to protect herself, the group begins to stomp and kick up dirt to throw predators off of the scent of blood. With their bodies, the sister elephants create a hiding place for the mother, allowing her to focus on giving birth while the powerful group of ladies shield her and the baby from potential harm. If that is not already amazing enough, once the calf is born, the sister elephants break out in song by trumpeting in unison to celebrate the new life in their herd.
In Psalm 119 the psalmist pens the beautiful words describing the Lord as his hiding place and shield. We are not sure who the author is, but we do know that he experienced a lot of adversity in his life. Despite his struggles he writes of the goodness of the Lord’s character in one of the longest chapters in the Bible. Not only does he write about who the Lord is to him, but he writes with great worship over God’s law, His Torah, and celebrates in gratitude what it means to him. Like the elephants providing a shelter and a shield for the mama elephant, the psalmist describes the law and God’s Word as the perfect hiding place to shelter and shield him from the evil around him. We can find our own safe place within God and His Word. He shields us from the fiery darts this world tries to take us out with and protects us with His goodness. When we get fearful or lose hope, we can turn to the Scriptures to have life breathed back into our hearts and to encourage us despite what the circumstances we are facing.
The Lord is our own personal hiding place for peace and security from now until eternity. Amen!
Hold His gaze, sweet friend.
